National Rail
carries container freight across Australian interstate railway network
of over 6000 kilometres using approximately 300 trains a week with
an annual revenue of approximately
A$ 500 million.
National Rail Corporation was in the process of moving from a government
owned entity in to a private company. This entailed moving to a new
model of doing business.
National Rail Marketing Department’s challenge was to define
a new Volume-Based Incentive Pricing (VIP) program with the facility
to provide significant customisation for diverse needs of its high
volume customers.
National Rail Marketing Department wanted to negotiate product and
services from the high volume customers and other customers, free
of any concerns relating to implementing new products and billing.

Boston Software,
in collaboration with National Rail finance staff, designed and developed
a new system for implementing a Volume-Based Incentive Pricing (VIP).
The key feature of this system was to be flexible in order to manage
the new business model and marketing department’s on-going customisation
of products & services.
VIP Management System extracted customer freight bookings and cancellation
data from Freight Management System and customer revenue information
from pricing and billing system.
System’s validation facility was used to perform complex and
crucial tests for validating extracted data against defined incentive
rules and National Rail’s business rules.
System’s incentive calculation facility was used to calculate
monthly incentives to the customers. System’s reporting facility
was used to generate end-of-the-month incentive statements for customers
and reports for the National Rail’s Finance and Marketing Department.
The VIP Management system provided National Rail Marketing Department
the flexibility to customise National Rail products and services to
each customer’s needs. Finance Department had the flexibility
to implement these new products and services by only modifying one
single system with minimum impact to the Freight Management System
and ORACLE Finance System. This flexibility in the VIP Management
System resulted in significant cost saving to National Rail.
